UK Public Holidays and Bank Days Explained

The United Kingdom has a complex holiday system that varies between England & Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

Bank Holidays by Region

England & Wales: Typically 8 bank holidays per year including New Year's Day, Easter Monday, Early May Bank Holiday, Spring Bank Holiday, Summer Bank Holiday, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day.

Scotland: Has additional holidays including January 2nd.

Northern Ireland: Includes the Twelfth of July (July 12th).

When a Holiday Falls on a Weekend

If a bank holiday falls on a weekend, a substitute weekday (known as a "bank holiday in lieu") is usually designated. In 2027, Christmas Day falls on a Saturday, so the substitute day will be Monday December 27.

UK Holiday Allowance

Full-time UK workers are entitled to 28 days of paid annual leave (including bank holidays). This is one of the lowest statutory allowances in Europe — Germany offers 30 days while France offers 25 days plus 11 public holidays.
